Column 5Last Rites Held
For Merrill PorterMerrill Dennis Porter who was born June 11, 1882 in Hancock County, Illinois was the son of Sarah Frances Mosley and Edmond Guin Porter. He departed this life in Graham Hospital, Keokuk, Iowa, Thursday morning May 18 having attained the age of 67 years, 11 months and 20 days. He was sick only a week of a heart condition.
Mr. Porter was a lifelong resident of Hancock County.
On January 22 1907 he was united in marriage to Mabel Bryant of Carthage community. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Paul Cuerden, East Moline; Mrs. Vincent Allison, Ferris; Edmond Porter, St. Louis, Missouri; Garnet Porter, Carthage; Gloria and Joanne at home; Elouise Stillwell, Chicago. Also surviving are a brother Miner C. Porter, Canton, Illinois, and two sisters, Mrs. Sam Boston and Mrs. William Strong both of Carthage. A number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his mother and father, two sisters and one brother. (1)
When a young man Mr. Porter united with the Christian church.
The funeral was held at the First Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Walter C. Burk officiating. Mrs. Vernon Webster, Mrs. Leonard Miller and Mrs. Ted Lane were in charge of the music.
Pall bearers were Melgar Mosley, Tommy Dunn, Vernon Webster, Russell Bettiswrth, Ralph Hoffman and Frank Smith. Masonic rites by Hancock Lodge No. 20 A. F. & A. M. Interment at Moss Ridge Cemetery.
1 also preceding him in death was his first wife, Ella Minnie Edgar.
