Column 3John Nelson Porter was born Dec. 12, 1832, in Morgan Co., Ill., and died Dec. 1st, 1905, at his late home in Carthage, aged 72 years, 11 months and 19 days. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Mosley, of Hancock Co., Ill., in 1857. To this union were born 10 children, two of whom died in infancy. Two grown sons, Winston and Marion, and one daughter, Mrs. Jesse Smith, passed away some 20 years ago. The surviving children are, Armstead, Elmer, John, Stanley and Mrs. C. C. Cox, all residents of this county. The wife of the deceased preceded him to the grave 22 years ago, and was laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery, and by her side he sleeps the last sleep, having been borne thither by an escort of his old army comrades Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3, following a very able funeral discourse by Judge C. J. Scofield at the Christian church in Carthage.
Deceased had been a member of the Christian church for many years and his life as a Christian and as a man had been such that when the last summons came, he went, "not as the quarry slave scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfalting trust, approached his grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams." May his awakening greet the brighter dawn, the eternal herald of the day that knoweth no night. Mo.
