Jessie Payne Electrocuted

A Brookfield native who lived in Bucklin until he joined the Navy was killed while working on electrical lines in Holts Summit near Jefferson City Tuesday afternoon.

Jessie Payne, 42, of Macon, was pronounced dead minutes after he was electrocuted by Dr. Lori Feeler, a physician who ran from the nearby Holts Summit clinic to try to revive him.

Payne was working for Capital Electric, Leavenworth, Kan., a firm working for Missouri power and Light, it was reported by Dr. Dean Brashears, deputy medical examiner.

According to Dr. Brashears, Payne and a co-worker, Elmo Lay, were working in the bucket of a boom truck putting up a high line.  The men had just finished the work and were disconnecting the ground wire when Payne, who was holding a ground wire in one hand, apparently touched a live wire with his other hand.

Payne remained conscious for a few minutes until the boom was lowered and he was removed from the bucket, but he apparently died shortly thereafter.

Dr. Feeler tried unsuccessfully to revive him.  He was taken to Charles E. Still Hospital, Jefferson City.

The body was taken to the Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home, Macon, where services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m.  Visitation is to begin Thursday at 4 p.m.
