Column 4Jesse Payne
Jesse Payne passed away at his home, 230 West Boston street, Sunday evening, April 23, 1939. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, from Zion church, conducted by the Rev. L. B. Bell, of the Pentecostal church, and burial was made in the Cash cemetery east of Bucklin.
Jesse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Payne, was born in Johnson county, Missouri, April 24, 1856. His entire early life was spent there, and he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Thompson, and to them were born three children, Willie Payne, Mrs. Mamie Brant of Keenesburg, Colorado, and Mrs. Ada Russell, of Webb City, Missouri. The wife and mother preceded him in death, and Mr. Payne came to Linn county, settling on a farm east of Bucklin. On February 16, 1907, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Dovie York of the same neighborhood, and to them were born four children, Jesse Payne, Edgar Payne, Lawrence Payne and Mrs. Flossie Sheffield, all of Brookfield. Besides the children, Mr. Payne leaves one brother, John Payne, of Oklahoma; nineteen grandchildren and six step-children, Henry York, Joe York, and Dewey York of Bucklin; John York of Concordia, Kansas; Mrs. Anna Schneider, of Litchfield, Illinois, and Mrs. Grace Green, of Brookfield.
For many years, Mr. Payne was a member of the Baptist church, and had many friends over the county.
