Dean "Dutch" Patterson, 83, of LaHarpe, died on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at his home.
He was born on July 30, 1926, on the Patterson farm near LaCrosse, a son of Earl and Mona McCleary Patterson. He married Dolly I. Doyle on June 2, 1960, in Denver, Colo.
Dean is survived by his wife; two daughters, Monalisa (Tim) Graves of LaHarpe and Linda (Tim) Leinbach of Milan; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Neal Patterson of LaHarpe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Becky Sue; and two sisters, Nina Weeks and Wilda Lyons.
Dean served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1947, and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. From 1948 to 1977 he co-owned and operated the FS service station in LaHarpe. He then worked as a mechanic for 20 years at the LaHarpe Motor Sales Ford dealership.
He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion and a 40-year member of the LaHarpe Fire Department where he served as fire chief from 1950 to 1969, at which time he was appointed fire marshall. He enjoyed camping and attended his grandchildren's sporting events.
Services were held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Rev. Larry Menschel officiated. Burial with military rites was in the LaHarpe Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Fire Department or the LaHarpe Ambulance Service.
