A FUNERAL AND A FIRE  -- "SOME SINGIN" --
    53D ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT OF THE
    COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS,
    OF KEOKUK.

MARCH 12. -- Died, at her home near Oak Grove morning of the 8th inst., Mrs. Rebecca Mosley, aged 52 years.  Mrs. Mosley was a daughter of the late Isaac Riggins; a quiet, christian woman.  For 35 years past a member of Oak Grove Christian church.  She leaves her husband, two daughters, one son and an adopted daughter; three brothers, four sisters, an aged mother; besides many other relatives to mourn that she is dead.  She had been sick with consumption for several months past, never murmured or complained at her lot.  Loving hands did all possible for her comfort.  She died calmly and peacefully in hope of eternal life.  By her special request her funeral was preached on last Saturday in Oak Grove church by the writer; a large audience being present.  Her remains were laid away in the cemetery adjoining the church lot.  Just as the people reached the front yard of the church, Mr. D. E. Gillenwater's house, one mile away, in full view, was seen on fire.  Mrs. Gillenwater is a sister of deceased, and just able to sit up from a severe attack of pneumonia; the remainder of the family at the funeral and also all the neighbors.  Before help could arrive everything was consumed, dwelling and contents.  Mrs. G. was greatly shocked and prostrated by her trouble of her sister's death and the terrible ordeal of her home burning at the very hour her sister's body was being consigned to the grave.  The property was insured, but far below its value.  This was a sad day for the writer.  The old home surroundings were sorrowful, -- old friends are in mourning and distress.  Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all.

Note:  Not sure why obit says father was Isaac Riggins.  Her parents were Jesse Riggens & Sally Ann McCubbin.
