Page 36John D. Metcalf was born in Chitanango, New York state, and had he lived until July 26, he would have been 79 years old. He died near Rome, Ia., May, 11, 1909.
When 12 years of age he moved with his father to Carthage, Ill. In 1854, he was united in marriage to Cordelia Wilson and to this union three children were born, Sylvester, of Colorado, Albert, of Kansas, and Mrs. Julia Galloway, of Carthage, Ill. In the year 1870, he was again married to Sarah Isabelle Galloway. To this union were born three children namely, Lizzie Wright, of Mt. Pleasant, Ia., Frank and Edwin at home. His wife was stricken with paralysis a year ago and is quite an invalid. He leaves one brother, Thomas M., of Carthage, four sisters, Ann Wilson, of Susin, Calif.; Sarah Stickel, of Macomb; Jane Maxwell, of Peoria, Ill.; Eliza Couchman, of Carthage, Ill. Two brothers, Joseph and Isaac, and two sisters, Rebecca and Mary, have preceded him to the better world. He united with the Baptist church some ninetee years ago.
Funeral from the residence May 13, burial at Glassglow, Ia. There were many beautiful flowers.
