A. Wayne "Gramps" McConnell, 92, Fountain Green, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 9:55 p.m. at the Memorial Hospital, Carthage.
He was born Feb. 27, 1913 near Fountain Green, the son of James Ralph and Annie Christine (Anderson) McConnell. He married Arlene Brandon March 8, 1934 in Macomb. She preceded him in death July 25, 1975.
He is survived by six daughters, Bonnie (Bill) McKeown, Blandinsville, Patricia Shores, Carthage, Marcia (Tom) Foster, Colchester, Karen (Jack) Matthews, Colchester, Shirley (Robert) Hecker, Winfield, Iowa and Betty Jo McConnell, LaHarpe; one daughter-in-law, Linda McConnell, LaHarpe; four sons, James Lynn (Betty) McConnell, Carthage, Garold McConnell, LaHarpe; Alan (Cathy) McConnell, Crystal Lake and Ted (Lisa) McConnell, Fountain Green; 35 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, John Mark McConnell in infancy and Robert McConnell; one son-in-law, Robert Shores; two sisters, Jessie Hasten and Helen York and six brothers, Clyde, Fay, Milt, Gay, Wes and Jim McConnell.
He farmed near Fountain Green and worked as a custodian and bus driver for the Fountain Green School. In 1964, he became Fountain Green Township Road Commissioner and continued in that position for many years. He also served on the Fountain Green School Board. He enjoyed puzzles, visiting with friends and reminiscing.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Mark Hanson and Ty Huston officiating. Burial will be in the McConnell Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2005. A memorial fund has been established for the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church.
