Columns 3 & 4It is our sad duty to chronicle the passing of two loved and respected women of our neighborhood who have gone from among us, namely, Mrs. Susan Maberry and Mrs. Jane Fleming. It is a curious coincidence that these ladies lived for years as nearest neighbors and good friends and were finally called hence on the same day. Both funerals were conducted by Elder D. C. Barber -- Mrs. Maberry's on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Christian Church, and Mrs. Fleming's at her late home on Sunday, Jan. 27. Below will be found an obituary of Mrs. Maberry. Mrs. Fleming's obituary will appear next week.
Susan Helms; second child of Hamilton and Areany Helms was born June 22, 1842, in Floyd county, Va. She was one of a family of seven children, five boys and two girls, namely: Madison, of Kansas; Susan, the deceased; Addison F., lately deceased; Mack, of Nebraska; Solomon, living north of Carthage; Bryant, who dies in boyhood; and Mrs. Emma Jones, who still resides in Virginia. Deceased was married to J. P. Maberry Nov. 17, 1867, in Virginia. With her husband she came to Hancock county in 1871, and had lived in this county nearly thirty-six years. To Mr. and Mrs. Maberry five children were born -- four sons and one daughter -- the daughter and one son dying in infancy or childhood. The three remaining sons, R. Clint Maberry of this place, Arthur L. Maberry, of West Point, and W. Hamilton Maberry of Carthage were all present. Besides her husband, her three sons, three brothers and one sister, she leaves grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn her death. She was of a family notably blessed with a fund of mirth and good cheer, always kind and pleasant. She united with the church of Christ at this place Oct. 10, 1892, and was a faithful attendant as long as her health would permit. She was a faithful wife, a good mother, a kind friend and neighbor, and will be sincerely mourned by all who knew her. She has been in failing health a number of years with no hope of permanent improvement. Last Tuesday evening she grew worse and the end was known to be near. She lingered until 1 o'clock in the morning of January 25, when her spirit departed from this tenement of clay and winged it way to the God who gave it. Sister Maberry is freed from her suffering. She had reached the age of 64 years, 7 months and 3 days.
