Merlin Lovell, 52, of near
Carthage became the county's
fifth traffic fatality about 3
a. m. Tuesday when the car in
which he was riding hit a bridge
abutment.

The car, a 1946 Ford driven by Lovell's nephew, Charles Hoover, 27, of Carthage, turned over as it hit the abutment on a gravel road 2 miles east of the Ferris corner.  Lovell, who possibly was killed instantly, was taken to Memorial hospital, Carthage, where he was dead on arrival.
