Mrs. Etta Jackson of
Fountain Green Dies

Following an illness of some three weeks duration, Mrs. Orville Jackson, a lifelong resident of the Fountain Green community, passed away at her home in that village in the early morning hours of May 10th, 1948, aged 77 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Etta M. Ebert, daughter of Daniel and Frances George Ebert was born near Fountain Green, July 26th 1870.  She received her education in the public schools of her home community and was married March 29th 1888 to Reuben H. Long, a promising young farmer of the Webster vicinity, the new home being established on a farm near that of the groom's parents.

To this union were born two children, Blanche E. and Freddie W. both of whom were very dear to their parents, who however, were not privileged to keep them long, Freddie passing away March 16th, 1900 at the tender age of 3 years.  The daughter grew to young womanhood and became the wife of Edward Clark of near Carthage, but after a few short years of married life, she too was stricken and passed away on Jan. 12th, 1913 at the early age of 23.

Following the death of their own beloved children, Mr. and Mrs. Long took into their home at various times several homeless children upon whom they lavished much tender care and afternoon.

Although a member of the Majorville Methodist Church, Mrs. Long for many years attended the Webster church where her husband was the faithful Sunday School Superintendent and she a teacher in the Sunday School.

Following the untimely passing of Mr. Long on June 28th, 1934, Mrs. Long disposed of the farm which had been her home for so many years and moved to Fountain Green where she purchased property.

In June 1941 she was married to Orville Jackson who has ever been a thoughtful and devoted husband and is now left to mourn her passing.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jackson is survived by three sisters, Mrs. D. I. Miller of South Gate, California, Mrs. Leah Massingill of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mrs. Earl Lenix of Rawlins, Wyoming and one brother, Gabe Ebert of Carthage, Ill.  There are also a number of nieces and nephews to whom she was devoted and who in turn, were greatly attached to her.  Of these, one nephew in particular, Glen Massingill of Galesburg, with his wife were especially thoughtful of her.  She is also survived by four step children who were likewise very kind and courteous to her.

A kind and loving wife and mother, a good friend and neighbor, she will long be remembered by those who knew and loved her.

It seemeth such a little way to me
Across to that strange country, the
    beyond;
And yet, not strange, for it has grown
    to be
The home of those of whom I am so
    fond;
They make it seem familiar and
    most dear;
As journeying friends bring distant
    countries near.
So close it lies that when my sight
    is clear
I seem to see the gleaming of that
    strand;
I know I feel those who have gone
    from here
Come near enough to even touch my
    hand.
I often think but for our veiled eyes
We would find, heaven right round
    about us lies.
And so to me there is no string to
    death.
And so the grave has lost its victory.
It is but crossing, with suspended
    breath
And white set face a little strip of
    sea,
To find he loved one on the other
    shore,
More beautiful, more precious than
    before.

The funeral services were held at the Elms Wednesday at 2 o'clock with Rev. H. C. Reichel officiating.  The music was in charge of Ada Latherow, Gladys McConnell and Ellen Lenix.

Pall bearers were Don Lenix, Fred Rings, Don Thompson, Albert Barr, Charles Spangler and Harry Spangler.

Interment was at Majorville.
