Column 3J. Thompson Lionberger
Joseph Thompson Lionberger died at his home in LaHarpe, at 5:15 p. m., Friday, December 10, 1926, at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 2 days. He was bedfast not more than two weeks but his health had gradually declined for a year or more.
He was born, May 8, 1851 in Pilot Grove township, this county, the only son of Joseph and Mahala Lionberger. In the family were eight children, three of his seven sisters surviving. They are Mrs. Virginia Crow and Mrs. Lotta Blackwell of Carthage and Mrs. Mae Knight, of Chicago.
His boyhood was spent on a farm in Pilot Grove township and he clerked in clothing stores in Burnside and Carthage for about seventeen years, and then took up the trade of painting and paper hanging which he followed until the close of his life.
He was married to Miss Emma Nixon at Carthage, October 28, 1883. The wife preceded him in death on June 11, 1916. They were the parents of four children, Clarence who died in infancy; Mrs. Clay Nudd, of LaHarpe; Clyde, of Hamilton, Ill., and Claude, of Philadelphia, Pa. There are five grandchildren, Byron, Gerald and Harry Nudd, of LaHarpe and Evelyn and Lloyd Lionberger, of Hamilton.
Mr. Lionberger was a member of the LaHarpe Christian church, joining September 24, 1905. He was an industrious and capable workman and in all business affairs was strictly honest and reliable. Many friends sorrow with the family at his death.
Funeral services were held at the LaHarpe Christian Church Monday afternoon at 1:30, Rev. Knight, of Hamilton, officiating. Burial in La Harpe cemetery.

PASSES AWAYJoseph Thompson Lionberger died at his home in LaHarpe Dec. 10, aged 75 years. He was the son of Joseph and Mahala (Thompson) Lionberger and was born on the old Thompson homestead in Pilot Grove township, eleven miles northeast of Carthage, where his mother's family settled in 1835. Both his parents came from the east to this county in a very early day, his father from Virginia and his mother from southern New Hampshire.
Mr. Lionberger was married Oct. 28, 1833 to Miss Emma Nixon, of Carthage, and four children were born to them, Alice, wife of Clay Nudd, of LaHarpe; twin sons, Clyde, of Hamilton, and Claude, of Philadelphia and Clarence, who died in infancy. He is survived also by five grandchildren, Byron, Harold and Harry Nudd and Evelyn and Lloyd Lionberger, children of his son, Clyde. Mrs. Lionberger died about ten years ago.
Three sisters also survive him: Mrs. Virginia Crow and Mrs. Lotta Blackwell, of Carthage, and Mrs. A. B. Knight, of Chicago. Four sisters, Mrs. Anna Huston, Miss Susie Lionberger, Mrs. Sallie Laidlaw and Mrs. Clara Prettyman, preceded him in death.
Mr. Lionberger was for a time a resident of Carthage when thirty or more years ago he clerked for E. C. Quimby.
The funeral was conducted from the LaHarpe Christian church Monday afternoon, Rev. G. W. Knight, pastor of the Hamilton Christian church officiating. Interment was in LaHarpe cemetery. Arthur M. Thompson and Mrs. Ethel Lovitt, of Carthage, cousins of Mr. Lionberger attended the funeral from here.
