Bertie Gene Lemley, 56, of Monmouth, formerly of Carthage, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at O'Fallon, Ill. He was born Dec. 15, 1942, in Carthage, the son of Virgil and Dorothy Beck Lemley. On April 18, 1964 in Metz, France, he married Jacqueline "Jackie" Marcher. She survives.
He is survived by his wife; his father; three sons, Garry Lemley of Monmouth, Phillip Lemley of Monmouth, Corey Lemley of Midway, Ga.; three sisters, Sandra Martin of Plymouth, Pat Kemp of Maddill, Okla., Sharon Londrie of Carthage; three brothers, Jerry Lemley of Bardolph, Ill., Robert Lemley of Carthage, Larry Lemley of Carthage; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Army and the National Guard. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Monmouth, the Methodist Mens Group and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, his family, especially his grandchildren, attending family reunions and visiting France. He had been a truck driver, driving most recently for W. W. Transport in Burlington, Iowa.
Services were held July 12, 1999 at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage with Charles Ferguson officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Carthage. A full military service was conducted by the Phillip Hartzell American Legion Post 74 and the Carthage VFW Post 5117 at the graveside.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
