Clifford B. Latherow, 78, of LaHarpe, who served as an Illinois State Senator for 12 years, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born Dec. 4, 1915, near Fountain Green, the son of George and Gail Miller Latherow. He married Betty Hungate June 26, 1940, near Blandinsville. She survives.
He is also survived by one daughter, Linda Wilson of Farmington Hills, Mich.; two sons, Donald Latherow of rural Carthage and Jerry Latherow of Chicago; one brother, Brice Latherow of Carthage; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Latherow graduated from LaHarpe High School and received his BA degree from Western Illinois University in 1937. He taught high school in Fountain Green for six years before entering the Navy during World War II. He served in the Atlantic and Western Pacific Theaters and was discharged as a lieutenant in 1945. He farmed near Fountain Green for several years and served several years on the Fountain Green Board of Education. He also served 14 years as township supervisor, one year as chairman of the Hancock County Board of Supervisors.
He served as a state senator through the 74th to 79th General Assemblies. While in the senate he served as Chairman of the Agriculture Committee and in 1972 and 1976 was a delegate to the Republican National Convention. At the time of his death he was serving on the Western Illinois University Foundation Board.
Mr. Latherow was a member of LaHarpe American Legion Post 301, V.F.W. Post of Hamilton, Macomb Elks, LaHarpe Masonic Lodge 195, Quincy Consistory and was a 33rd Degree Mason. He was also a member of the Fountain Green United Presbyterian Church.
Services were held Friday at Banks and Beals Funeral home of LaHarpe with the Rev. William Foose officiating. Burial was in the LaHarpe Cemetery.
