Column 4THOMAS J. LANE
After long months of great suffering Thomas J. Lane passed away Sunday, May 9, 1920, at 9:45 p. m., aged 79 years, 3 months and 2 days.
Mr. Lane was the son of Fredrick and Julia A. Lane and was born in this county, living his life in the vicinity of his birth.
He was married on Sept. 19, 1861, to Miss Mary Eliza Jones, daughter of William and Charlotte Jones, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
To this union were born five children; Gertrude dying in infancy; Mrs. May Earls, Earl and Lawrence Lane of near Carthage; Mrs. Willa K. Lyons of Tina, Mo., and Walter S. Lane of Boneparte, Ia. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, also by one brother, Wesley Lane of Carthage; and three sisters, Mrs. Clara Bentley of Chicago and Mrs. Fanny Wolf and Mrs. Alice Rucker of California.
About thirty-five years ago Mr. Lane joined the Elm Tree Methodist church.
In 1862, Mr. Lane volunteered in Co. H. 118th Illinois and served with that splendid regiment throughout the civil war. Mr. Lane was always modest about his own service but he had a great sense of humor and an intense patriotism and his reminiscences of his days in the army were vivid and entertaining. He was a good soldier, a good comrade and kind and affectionate in his family.
During his long invalidism his comrades kept him in mind and those who were able called on him frequently, and after his death paid their utmost tribute of love and respect.
The funeral was held at the residence Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A. L. McArthur of Hamilton officiating. Interment at Moss Ridge.
At the cemetery the G. A. R. officiated, taps being sounded as the casket was lowered.
Those who attended the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lane and children, of Boneparte, Ia.; Mrs. Samuel Lyons, of Tina, Mo.
