James W. Kimbrough, son of Elizabeth and Wyatt Kimbrough, passed away Wednesday, July 17th, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hattie Yetter of East Carthage.
The deceased was born at Nashville, Tennessee, July 23, 1845, being a member of a family of five children. When five years of age he moved with his parents to Hopkinsville, Kentucky. By occupation he was a stone cutter.
At the age of 16 he entered the civil war. He served almost four years, beginning in October, 1861, and serving until the end of the war, July, 1865.
On Dec. 22, 1865, he was united in marriage to Nancy Adline Russell. To this union were born ten children, three of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Ella Irvin passed from this life Oct. 12, 1916, at the age of 43 years. Those living are, Mrs. Hattie E. Yetter, Edward W. and David R. of Carthage; Mrs. C. W. Harder of Glendora, Calif. and Chas. T. and Alfred C., of Karlstad, Minn. Besides these are a sister, Mrs. Kitty Wolfrey, of Glendora, Calif., thirteen grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends left to mourn this loss.
Mr. Kimbrough came with his family and parents in 1866 to Illinois. Since that time he has resided in or near Carthage. The early part of his life was spent farming. In 1902 he moved from his farm east of Carthage to Carthage. The wife departed this life Oct. 26, 1908. After the death of his daughter, Mrs. Irvin, his home was broken up and he spent his time with his children, with the exception of the last winter, which was spent at the Soldier's Home in Quincy.
He professed Christ in his early boyhood days and has since remained faithful. During his entire life he was ever ready to lend a helping hand. To his family he was a kind husband and loving father. He was of a jovial disposition, very friendly and hospitable and was greatly beloved and esteemed by his comrades and friends. He was honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow man and was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him.
The funeral was held at Franklin M. E. Church Friday afternoon. Interment in Sackman cemetery.
