Dorotha E. Kavanagh, 89, a longtime resident of Hamilton, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
She was born Aug. 18, 1915, in rural Carthage, a daughter of Forrest and Esther Bullock Bivens. On Dec. 22, 1950, she was married to Frank Kavanagh in the Christian Church Parsonage in Hamilton. He died April 14, 1998.
She is survived by one daughter, Janet (Kenneth "Duck") Whitaker of Hamilton; two sons, Gerald H. (Joyce) Biggs of Showlow, Ariz., and Roger L. (Judy) Biggs of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Randy (Jacque) Whitaker of Hamilton, Kenneth D. Whitaker of Hamilton, Larry Biggs of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Douglas (Laura) Biggs of Lemont, Karen (Daniel) Spain of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. and Michael (Patti) Briggs of Edwards, Colo.; and 10 great-grandchildren, Lacey, Jesse, Rikke, Wesley and Nicholas Whitaker of Hamilton, Chad and Taylor Biggs of Chicago, Jennifer Toothaker of Edwards, Colo., Daniel and Allyson Spain of Rancho Santa Margarita.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Mary Lou Smart; and two brothers, Lowell and Jim Bivens.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hamilton, and the Hamilton American Legion Auxiliary, where she held various offices and was president for many years. She worked with her late husband in the operation of their business, Kavanagh's Garage. She loved to garden and grow flowers, and cutting flowers and holding them for Memorial Day. She enjoyed canning produce from her garden and giving it away. She was also known as a good cook and for her pies.
Friends may call at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton after 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, and meet with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 21, in the Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton. Rev. Mark Horn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.
Memorials in the name of Dorotha E. Kavanagh have been established for the Hamilton United Methodist Church.
