The venerable Wiley Jones passed into peaceful slumber Wednesday morning, September 1, 1915, at his home two miles east and one-half mile south of Bentley, aged 81 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was a native of Tennessee, coming to Illinois with his parents in his youth.
He was united in marriage to Miss Polly Jenkins in 1854. To this union was born three children, Sarah Jane, Margaret Ann and Ezekial, Sarah Jane and Ezekial dying in infancy. Margaret Ann, wife of Frank Tucker of Blandinsville, surviving.
October 5, 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Tummons, to them were born five children, James Martin Jones, of Bentley, Ill.; William Jackson Jones, deceased; Lucinda Dell Hardy, of Huntsville, Ill.; Caleb B. near the old home place and Robert Franklin, dying in infancy, 1875.
He received a hope in Christ many years ago. In the year 1889, he with his wife were received into fellowship of the Middle Creek Baptist church. A few years later he was ordained to the office of deacon, which capacity he faithfully served the church as long as his health would permit.
He was stricken with paralysis about ten years ago from which he never recovered, but bore his afflictions with that patient endurance that characterized his life, ever attended by his faithful wife, who cherished for him the warmest affection, never tiring of caring for him, she faithfully toiled to do every thing she could to make him comfortable, even under her own afflictions. The last year their son, James and his devoted wife came to the old home to give father and mother their tenderest care.
The last two months his sons and daughters, relatives and friends were ever near to give aid and comfort, but soon all was over and he crossed the shining river.
Yes, father's chair is vacant and mother is so lonely, home seems so deserted, but the luster of his character and of his unselfish and devoted life must always illumin the home and the lives of those left behind, in these as husband and father, he left his dear companion and children, the richest heritage. We have lived neighbors and in common with many others have learned of his worth as a man, his generous heart, his honorable dealings, he loved his fellowman, his hospitality, a strong trait will be recalled to mind by many -- his life should be an encouragement.
He leaves to mourn his loss the wife, two sons, two daughters, sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at the home Friday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Elder L. E. Frazee, assisted by Elder Rice Harris, Basco, Ill. The pallbearers were the six grandsons, F. A. Tucker, Ferris; C. L. Hardy, Clifton Hardy, Bryan J. Hardy, Huntsville; L. C. Jones and R. T. Jones, Bentley. The choir sang beautifully, "Asleep in Jesus," "Some Sweet Day." The services were attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in Harmony cemetery. Relatives and friends attended the funeral from the following places: Huntsville, Macomb, Blandinsville, Loraine, Carthage, Mediapolis, Ia.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Ferris, Plymouth, Augusta, Bowen, Adrian, Camp Point, Basco, Durham and Colchester.
My head and stay is taken away
And I am left alone.
My husband dear who was so near,
Is taken away and gone.
It grieves my heart, 'tis hard to part
With one who was so kind;
Where shall I go to tell my woe,
Or ease my troubled mind?
In wisdom's ways we spent our days;
Much comfort we did find;
But he is gone, his glass is run,
And I am left behind.
Nought can I find to ease my mind,
Of things which are below;
For earthly toys but vex my joys,
And aggravate my woe.
But I'll repair to Jesus, where
I'll ease my troubled breast;
And leave my sorrows all behind,
And be forever blest.Card of Thanks
