Mary Jane Tummons was born in Nashville, Tenn., Jan. 29, 1845, and passed away at the old home place east of Bentley at 11:30 a. m. Jan. 13, 1918, aged 72 years, 11 months and 14 days.
She came to Hancock county, Illinois with her parents about 1858. On Oct. 5, 1862, she was united in marriage to Wiley Jones, who preceded her in death more than three years ago. Five children blessed this happy home, James Martin Jones, of Bentley, Ill.; William Jackson Jones, deceased; Lucinda Dell Hardy, of Huntsville, Ill.; Caleb B. Jones near the old home place and Robert Franklin dying in infancy in 1875.
She received a hope in Christ many years ago and in 1889 she with her husband united with the Middle Creek Baptist church. She served in the capacity of deaconess.
She leaves to mourn her loss two sons, two daughters, sixteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many friends. Thus ends this blessed useful life. We often think of her as given to hospitality. Happy are the memories of her hospitable home, of the rare and gracious hospitality of her big heart and gracious soul, and we know that heaven seems homelike to one who always listened to heavenly voices and reflected heaven in the kindliness of her heart. It was a blessing to know her. The years brought constant toil in the rearing of a family, but were characterized by tireless unselfish devotion, but have been years of great and glorious victories for home ties, where forever her name will be honored and beloved.
The funeral services were conducted at the dear old home Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 11 o'clock, Rev. L. E. Frazee officiating, the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Harmony cemetery.
