J. M. Jones

James Martin Jones, eldest son of Wiley and Mary Jane Jones, was born January 6, 1864, in a country home in Rock Creek township two miles west of Burnside, Ill.

When about four years of age the family moved to Harmony township and this vicinity has been his home since that time.

On September 1, 1885, he was united in marriage to Laura Ellen Mathias, who with their daughter, Mrs. Chellis Coffman, and grandson, Howard, survive him.

The deceased has been in failing health for several months, but of recent weeks had appeared more like his former self and was able to mingle with his neighbors and friends.

On Thursday evening, July 9th, after a day of moderate activities and after enjoying the evening meal, he suddenly suffered a severe heart attack of less than an hour's duration and passed quietly away at his home two and a half miles east of Bentley, Illinois, surrounded by his wife and daughter and family, at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 3 days.

Beside the immediate family he is survived by one brother, Caleb B. Jones of this immediate vicinity, a sister, Lucinda Dell Hardy, of Bentley, Illinois, and a half-sister, Margaret Ann Tucker, of Blandinsville, Ill.  His father and mother, a brother, William Jackson, and an infant brother preceded him in death.

A devoted husband, an affectionate father, a faithful brother, neighbor and friend has passed on to receive his reward.

The funeral services were conducted at the home by Elder Claud E. Webb, assisted by Rev. M. L. O'Harra of Carthage.  A great host of friends were present to pay their regards to the departed and to encourage the bereaved family.  The body was laid to rest in the Harmony cemetery nearby.
