Josephine Lillian Hunter, 85, of Memphis, MO, passed away February 9, 1994, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital, Memphis, MO.
Josephine was born July 4, 1908, in a logging camp near Pound, WI, where her father was a foreman. The daughter of Adolphus and Rose Tudor Thurber, she moved with her family to Scotland County, MO, where she spent the remainder of her life.
Josephine graduated from a rural grade school, the Memphis High School, Kirksville Teachers College, and did graduate work at Columbia University.
In 1923, she joined the Methodist Church at Memphis, MO, and remained a faithful member until her death.
On April 10, 1940, Josephine married Gale Hunter at the Methodist Church parsonage in Memphis, MO, with the Reverend Wilbur Longstreth performing the ceremony. The Hunters lived on a farm until their retirement in 1973, when they moved to Memphis, MO. In 1990, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Josephine taught for more than 40 years in the area schools, serving as elementary principal several years and with the Title I Program at Fox Valley, IA, the last five years of her work.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Gale Hunter, in 1990; her parents; three sisters, Ada Ellen Thurber, Bessie Edna Snyder, and Frances Margaret Tippett; one brother, Avon Thurber; and one nephew, Roger Snyder.
She is survived by one niece, Linda Mitterer and family; two nephews, Alan Thurber and family; and Roderick Snyder and children. Also surviving are 10 nieces and nephews of her husband's, who have been very faithful and helpful to her.
Funeral services were held February 12, 1994, at the United Methodist Church, Memphis, MO. The Reverend Charles Hammack officiated the service. Music was provided by Joan Goosey, organist, and Tom Cotton, soloist.
Body bearers were Larry Rincy, Phil Dulcy, Pearl C. Cotton, John Dodge, Ronnie Gardner, and John Ed Luther.
Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO.
Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
The family has suggested memorials to the Memphis United Methodist Church.
