Page 120WM. T. HOUGH OF BOWEN DIES MONDAY NOON
The people of Augusta and vicinity were shocked Monday to learn that William T. Hough, of Bowen, was dead. Mr. Hough had been in excellent health for a man of his age until about two weeks ago when he suffered a stroke of paralysis. His daughter, Miss Ellen Hough, nurse at the Augusta hospital, went at once to the bedside of her father and gave him a daughter's love as well as the care of a skillful and trained nurse but Mr. Hough's condition continued to grow worse until he finally passed away at 12:08 o'clock Monday noon.
Mr. Hough was one of Bowen's prominent farmers, his home being located one mile north and three-fourth of a mile west of Bowen. He and his son, E. Gilmore Hough, were breeders of purebred Duroc-Jersey swine and their exhibits of swine at the Augusta live stock shows have always been among the best in the show.
Mr. Hough was always a booster for the Augusta show - a man who loved good farm animals - and up to the very day of his last illness talked with pride, about the splendid show hogs his son, Gilmore, was raising this summer. He was a lover of good cattle as well as of good hogs and for a number of years was a breeder of purebred Abredeen-Angus cattle, the herd owned by him and his son being one of the best in this community.
William Hough will be missed by all who knew him - missed because of his genial disposition, his willingness to help a needy friend and neighbor, and because of his having been a man among men - a good citizen, a devoted husband and father and a real neighbor.
Funeral services for Mr. Hough were held yesterday (Wednesday) at 2:30 o'clock at the Christian church at Bowen with Rev. W. A. Taylor officiating. Rev. H. W. Tally assisted in the services and a double quartette sang a number of Mr. Hough's favorite songs. The following obituary was read at the funeral:
William Thomas Hough, son of William and Elmira Hough, was born near Troy, Montgomery county, North Carolina, April 26, 1850, and departed this life July 28, 1924, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 2 days, after an illness of fifteen days.
He moved to Illinois in the year 1869, locating near Carthage. Since that time he has made his home in Hancock county, spending his entire life farming.
He was the fifth child of a family of fourteen children, four girls and ten boys. His parents and ten brothers and sisters having preceding him in death. Those remaining are John A., of Galesburg, Ill., Joseph M., of Keokuk, Iowa and Preston, of Calloway, Neb.
He was united in marriage to Miss Mollie Burner in the late fall of 1876 who sacrificed her life for the birth of a baby boy who died in infancy.
Later he united in marriage to Mrs. Martha Lyon Jenkins, September 26, 1883. To this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters, Orva Claude, of Rock Island, Ill., Eliamina Owen, Enoch Gilmore, both of Bowen, Ill., and Mary Ellen, of Augusta, Illinois, one granddaughter, Helen Irene Hough, of South Omaha, Nebraska, all of whom together with a host of other relatives and friends survive.
He united with the Methodist Episcopal church remaining a member of that church until the organization of the Christian church of Bowen, Ill., of which he was a charter member.
