CARL HASTEN

April 21, 1921 -- April 19, 2003

Carl Junior Hasten, 81, of rural Blandinsville, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born April 21, 1921, in rural Blandinsville, the son of Carl and Jessie McConnell Hasten.  On Feb. 15, 1946, he married Mabel Hillers in Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Nancy Hasten of LaHarpe, Janet (Ron) Wear of Carthage, and Carol (Doug) Palmer of Blandinsville; two sons, James Hasten and Tom Hasten, both of LaHarpe; seven grandchildren, Carl and Katherine Hasten of Chicago, Amanda Palmer of Fountain Green, Joshua Palmer USMC, Iraq, Amy Brackenberry of Carthage, Tom Wear of Blandinsville and Mike Wear of Carthage; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Andrew, and Sophia Brackenberry and Elija and Jacob Wear of Carthage; one sister, Margie (Lee) Walker of Fountain Green; and two brothers, Bill Hasten of LaHarpe and Jim Hasten of Hobbs, New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Jean Blumer and Christine DeHaven; one brother, Lyman Hasten.

He farmed all of his life near Fountain Green.  He attended Fountain Green schools and graduated from Blandinsville High School in 1939 as salutatorian of his class.  He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.  He was a member of the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church, the Carthage VFW, the LaHarpe American Legion and was a Democratic precinct chairman for more than 40 years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe.  Burial followed with military rites in the LaHarpe Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Fountain Green Fire Department and the Carthage VFW.
