BETTY J. HARTWIG

June 14, 1929 -- June 6, 2003

Betty June Hartwig, 73, a lifetime resident of Hancock County, currently of Hamilton, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage after fighting a battle with cancer.

She was born on June 14, 1929, near Murrayville, in Morgan County, the daughter of Clay and Mary Lambright Wildrick.  She married Emery T. Hartwig on Nov. 2, 1947, at the First Christian Church in Hamilton.  He died July 4, 2002.

She is survived by three sisters, Mildred "Tommy" (Nathan) Hendricks of Dallas City, Marilee "Pug" (Bill) Price of Elvaston, and Norma (Ray) McGuiness of Berwick, Maine; one brother, Wendell (Louise) Wildrick of Carthage; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and one nephew.

She was a graduate of Elvaston High School, graduating with the class of 1947.  She and her husband were engaged in farming near Ferris, for over 20 years.  She was employed by Sears & Roebuck for a few years and the A.S.C.S. in Carthage for over 20 years, retiring in 1992.  She and her husband moved to Hamilton, building and opening the B & E Bottle Shop in 1967.  They operated the business for 10 years.  Later, they started the Four Seasons Car Wash and the Self Storage Facility, also in Hamilton.  She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and taking care of her lawn and home.  She enjoyed crocheting and had made many afghans for family and friends.  She loved visiting with her many friends, nieces and nephews.  She was an avid card player.  She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed sharing her cooking with family and friends.  She was of the Protestant faith.

Cremation rites have been accorded.  A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 10, at 11 a.m. at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton.  Pastor Ron Leonard officiated.  Inurnment was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.

Memorials have been established for Hancock County Blessing Hospice, Elvaston Presbyterian Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Lamporte Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
