Just heard of the death of Martin Grove, at his home in St. Marys township.  We have known Uncle Martin more than thirty years, and can say that a more honorable man never lived.        Tyro.

SHILO

Martin Grove died at his home here at 6:30 p. m. on the 22d. Mr. Grove had been in declining health for ten years, and during the last four years had been confined to his room the greater part of the time.  Deceased was born in Page county, Va., Feb. 3, 1821, came to Illinois with his parents in 1835, in the fifteenth year of his age, being among the early settlers here.  He married Alzada Cannon, daughter of Richard Cannon a former well known pioneer citizen, in 1848.  The surviving family are the widow and five children, Samuel, Nancy, Isaline Abbey, and Porter, all of whom are married except the latter.  He had been for many years a worthy and consistent member of the Baptist church at Providence. Mr. Grove died on the farm his parents settled 63 years ago.  We had lived a near neighbor to and had been intimately acquainted with deceased ever since we came to Illinois 46 years ago.  He was an honest, industrious man, a devoted husband, an indulgent father, and a faithful friend.  If Martin Grove had any faults, his neighbors of a lifetime never discovered them.  Is it true that only the good die? or do we only remember that which is good, true and lovable in our friends when they pass out from among us?  The burial occurred the following day at the family cemetery, Rev. Robt. Ausmus, of Camp Point, preaching the funeral discourse.  The remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of his old neighbors and relatives.
