ALEXANDRIA, Mo. -- Verna Rose Griffin, 62, Alexandria, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in her home.
She was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Keokuk to Leo Vernon and Rose Elizabeth Dalton Bryant.
She was married Aug. 6, 1965, in Carthage to James Griffin. He survives.
Survivors also include: a son, Clyde "Butch" Mitchell of Keokuk; two daughters, Jane Schuette of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dana McCelland of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren; three sisters; Helen Howard and Mary Jump, both of Keokuk, and Freda Rose of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Ward Bryant of Keokuk; and her mother-in-law.
Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, three brothers and two sisters.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.
Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery, rural Keokuk.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends 7-9.

Alexandria, Mo. -- Verna Rose Griffin, 62, of Alexandria, Missouri was Missouri's 1st elected female mayor, died 5:15 A.M. Thursday, September 5 in her home.
She was born February 20, 1929, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Leo Vernon and Rose Elizabeth Dalton Bryant.
She was married August 6, 1965 in Carthage, to James Griffin. He survives.
Mrs. Griffin had worked at Mitchell's Knotty Pine Restaurant. She had the honor of being the first woman in Missouri to be elected to a mayoral seat, that of Mayor of Alexandria, from 1959-1962. She was a member of the Keokuk Business and Professional Women, Ladies of the Eagles, Ladies of the Moose, and Keokuk Bowling Assn.
Survivors also a son, Clyde "Butch" Mitchell, two daughters, Jane Schuette of Los Vegas, Nevada and Dana McClellend of Hermosa Beach, California, 5 grandchildren , 3 sisters, Helen Howard, Mary Jump both of Keokuk and Freda Rose of Louisville, Kentucky, a brother, Ward Bryant of Keokuk and her mother-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. A funeral was to be today at DeJong Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Hauser officiating.
Burial was to be in the Hickory Grove cemetery, rural, Keokuk.

ALEXANDRIA, MO. -- Mrs. Verna Rose Griffin, 62, of Alexandria, the first woman to be elected a town mayor in Missouri, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 5, 1991) in her home after a long illness.
Born Feb. 20, 1929 in Keokuk, Iowa, Mrs. Griffin was a daughter of Leo V. and Rose E. Dalton Bryant. She has been employed at Mitchell's Knotty Pine Restaurant. She was a member of the Keokuk Business and Professional Womens Club, Ladies of the Eagles, Ladies of the Moose of Keokuk, and the Keokuk Bowling Association.
On Aug. 6, 1965 she married James Griffin in Carthage, Ill. He survives.
Survivors include son, Clyde "Butch" Mitchell of Keokuk, two daughters, Jane Schuette of Los Vegas and Dana McClelland of Hermosa Beach, Calif., three sisters, Helen Howard and Mary Jump, both of Keokuk and Freda Rose of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Ward Bryant of Keokuk, and five grandchildren including Clegguart and Amanda Rose Mitchell both of Keokuk. She was preceded in death by two daughters Shirley J. Hagmeier and Barbara Ann Hagmeier, three brothers, James, Willard, and Warren Bryant and two sisters, Eva Burdette and Opal Bryant.
Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, in the DeJong Funeral Home in Keokuk by Bro. Bill Hauser. Burial will be in Hickory Grove cemetery near Keokuk.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday with family meeting friends from 7 to 9.
