James E. Griffin

QUINCY, Ill. -- James E. Griffin, 73, of Quincy, Ill., formerly of Alexandria, Mo., died at 2:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Blessing Hospital.

He was born Oct. 7, 1930, in Quincy, the son of Everett and Julia Ann Jarrett Griffin.  He married Verna Mitchell in 1965 in Carthage, Ill.  She died in 1991.  He married Lola Gaus Rohs on July 17, 1933, in Quincy.  She survives.

He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church.

Mr. Griffin was a 1949 graduate of Quincy Senior High School and enjoyed hunting, playing cards and repairing guns.

He was an avid boat racer winning the World Championship in 1958.

He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Griffin was employed at Midwest Carbide in Keokuk for 18 years, retiring in 1989.  He later worked part-time for Hammond Guns in West Quincy.

Survivors include: his wife of Quincy; two sons, James Allen Griffin of Peoria, Ill., and Clyde "Butch" Mitchell and his wife, Paulette, of Keokuk; two daughters, Jane Schuette of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dana McClellan and her husband, Ray, of Statesville, N.C.; a step daughter, Jana East and her husband, Gary, of Oldsmar, Fla.; a step son, Eddie Maples and his wife, Patty, of Quincy; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home, 1435 State St., Quincy, with the Rev. Tom Rains and Pastor Clegguart Mitchell officiating.

Burial with military honors by the Keokuk American Legion Post #41 and the Keokuk V.F.W. Post #3508 will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Keokuk.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First Southern Baptist Church or to the American Red Cross.
