Death of D. E. Gillenwater

David Elias Gillenwater, son of Pleasant and Martha Gillenwater, was born at Rushville, Schuyler county, Illinois, Sept. 20, 1843, died Dec. 4, 1914, at the age of 71 years, 24 months and 14 days.

He came to Hancock county with his parents when a boy of 8 years of age.  He was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Riggens April 9, 1864.  There were born to this union seven children, four boys and three girls.  One boy and one girl have already preceded the father to the spirit world, leaving to mourn his death, the wife and companion of his earthly journey for over fifty years, also the remaining five children, namely Jesse H., Everett E., Fred, Pearl and Verla L.  He gave his heart to the Lord under the ministry of Elder Brewster and was baptized about 1877, uniting with the Church of Christ at Oak Grove of which he continued a faithful member, holding many official positions and giving of his time and money to the cause which he had espoused until age and failing health prevented him from attending the various services of the church.

About eight years ago his health began to fail and he became frailer year by year, until his spirit took its flight to the beyond Dec. 4.  He was a good friend and neighbor, a kind husband and father.  There is left a vacant chair in the home but he has gone to his reward and Jesus can heal the wounds which his passing left.

Funeral services at Oak Grove Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by A. L. Cole, pastor of the Christian church of Carthage.
