(1917-2000)Dixie Lee Garrison, 82, of Memphis, Missouri, died Oct 10, 2000, in the Scotland County Hospital. She was a resident of the Scotland County Care Center for the past 2 years.
The daughter of Edward and Agnes Williams Bear she was born on October 19, 1917, in Memphis, Missouri, where she also grew up and went to school. As a young person, she gave her life to Christ and was baptized at the First Christian Church of Memphis. She was married to Harold Lorain Owings of Unionville, Missouri, from 1935-55. To this union 8 children were born.
Following several years in other parts of Missouri and Idaho, she returned to Memphis in 1954, where she lived the remainder of her life. Dixie was well-known for her cleaning service for the Scotland County Library, Presbyterian Church, Harlo Donelson D.D.S. dentist office and many local families. Later she expanded her business to include ironings. For many years Dixie enjoyed serving as coordinator for the Sunday evening Bus Ministry at Memphis First Christian. She was active in the church's Christian Women Workers, where she served many years as secretary followed by several years as president. She also served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, two grandsons, and her second husband, Boyd Garrison, to whom she was married for 26 years.
She is survived by 7 children: Sally Owens of Flagstaff, Arizona; Robert (& Ella) Owings, George (& Sheila) Owings, and Tom Owings of Memphis; Mary (& Mike) Nauman and Myrtle Owings of St. Louis, Missouri; Newt (& Bev) Owings of Sarasota, Florida. Eighteen grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren: Carl Owens, Philadelphia; Cora Belle (& Jace) Phelps, Springfield, MO; Jerome (& Shannon) Owens, T.J., Xzavier, and Stephen (Dixie's great-great grandchildren), Macon, MO; Larry Owens, Clarence, MO; Rebecca Inzerillo, Heather and Frank, Jr of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Roberta (& Brett) Marlow, Angela and Laura of Bloomfield, IA; Reva Ann Owings, Abigail and Natalye of New Bloomfield, MO; Renita (& Roger) Barnett, Rolla, MO; Laura Ruth (& David) McCartney, Davie & Danielle, Memphis; Marilyn (& Roger) Smith, Constance, Andrew and Elizabeth, Plainsville, IL; Robert Rossiter, Kansas City, MO; Anita (& Mike) Simerl, Dyllyn and Jordyn, Memphis; John (& Dawn) Watson and Brittany, Kent, WA; Scott (& Heidi), Matthew and Michael, Germany; Craig (& Jennifer) Nauman, Anna & Samuel, St. Charles, MO; Carol Nauman, Martinsville, IN; Chad (& Marci) Nauman, St. Louis; Ken (& Rhondah) Owings and Zachary, Honolulu, HI; Amy (& Jason) Davis, Alyssa and Ryan, Raleigh, NC.
She will be fondly remembered by family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO, with Phillip Gore officiating. Interment will be in the Memphis Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2000 from 10:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with the family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.
