LAST RITES
HELD FOR AUNT
JULIA GALLOWAY

Beloved Citizen
Passed away on
Monday Morning

Julia Caroline, daughter of John and Cordelia Wilson Metcalf, was born Jan. 13, 1859, on her father's farm near Carthage, Hancock county, Illinois, and passed away at the county home Monday morning, Dec. 11th, at the age of 80 years.

She was married to Willis Galloway in 1873, and to this union was born one son, Archie O., who lives in Ohio.  She lived on their farm in the vicinity of the Middle Creek Baptist church, where her husband passed away about forty years ago.

When the farm was sold she bought a home in Carthage, where she lived several years, -- until her eyesight failed, and she voluntarily went to the county home where she lived for the past seven years.

She and her husband united with the Bentley Christian church and after she moved to Carthage she attended church services as often as she could.

She so much enjoyed the Sunday services at the home, and was very appreciative of the many kindnesses shown her by the ladies of the Sunshine Society, and the young people of Carthage College.

Julia was a very kind, neighborly and sympathetic woman helping in times of illness, and if food, clothing or shelter was needed, she gladly shared what she had with them.  She lived an industrious, uncomplaining and self-sacrificing life, and was friendly and sociable -- always welcoming her many friends to her home.

Julia always longed for her mother, who passed away when she was but a little child and in times of distress of mind and body, she expressed a desire to be laid beside her dear mother in Holland cemetery.  This request is being granted.

She had two brothers, Sylvester and Albert, whom she has not heard from for many years, and a half-sister, Elizabeth Metcalf Wright, who is dead, and two half-brothers, Frank Metcalf, living near Lockridge, Ia., and Edwin Metcalf, now deceased.

Besides her son, she leaves two grandchildren, Irene and Harold Galloway of Ohio, and a number of relatives and a host of friends, who will remember her for her brave and unselfish spirit.

There is no more fitting text for Mrs. Galloway than the one found in Rev. 7:14, "These are they which came out of great tribulation and have washed their robes and made them white in the  blood of the Lamb."

"Not now, but in the coming years,
It may be in that better land,
We'll know the meaning of our tears
And then, yes, then we'll under-
        stand."

The funeral was held at the Elms Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Fred Nichols officiating.  Mrs. Elsie Mullen and Mrs. Grace Compton sang "Rock of Ages," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," Mrs. Lou Egbers accompanist.

Casket bearers were: Albert Johnson, Charles Kimbrough, Dennis Kimbrough, Ed Harter, Clyde Galloway, Walter Galloway.  Interment in Holland cemetery south of Middle Creek.
