ALVIN E. FINK

June 21, 1922 -- Sept. 12, 2004

Alvin Edward Fink, 82, of Basco, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage of natural causes.

He was the seventh child of Herbert A. and Sarah Janssen Folkerts Fink, born June 21, 1922, at the home of his parents in Bear Creek Township.  On March 4, 1945, he married Norma R. Jenkins at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. J. B. Ackermann.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; three daughters, Colleen L. (Lloyd) Huls, Lorene C. (Herb) Fecht and Karen S. (Larry) Morehouse; one son, Ronald E. Fink; 18 grandchildren, Angie Newman, Bridget Williams, Tony, Nathan, Sid and Abe Huls, Jim, Nathan, Jordan, Aaron and Jonathan Fink, Kristie Chevalier, Tiffanie Ferry, Lindsay Moore and Lacey Fecht, Joel, Justin and Johanna Morehouse; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was baptized on July 23, 1922, by the Rev. G. S. Ide at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Carthage.  On April 16, 1938, he was confirmed by Rev. F. A. Witting, and he remained a lifetime member.  He attended Excelsior Grade School and German summer school at Immanuel Lutheran.  Because of his mother's illness and being needed at home, his formal education ended at sixth grade.  He was a successful grain and livestock farmer.  He operated a dairy farm for 45 years.  He could fix anything.  He could take lumber from old buildings and construct something useful.  During his retirement he enjoyed woodworking.  He made quilt racks, tables, cupboards and other items which he gave to his family and friends.  He loved and enjoyed his family.  He traveled many miles to sporting, school, and musical events to support his grandchildren.  He loved gardening.  He served on the Immanuel Lutheran Church council for many years, the building committee of 1949 and numerous other committees.  He helped with hunger walks, VBS projects, the restoration of the church's pipe organ and other church projects.  In 1976, he was a delegate for the Illinois District of the American Lutheran Church to attend the national convention in Washington, D.C.  He served as school director of Excelsior.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Pastor Dennis Scoville officiated.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Alvin Edward Fink

Alvin Edward Fink, 82, Basco, died of natural causes at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

He was born June 21, 1922, in the home of his parents in Bear Creek Township, the 7th son of Herbert A. and Sarah Janssen (Folkerts) Fink.  He married Norma R. Jenkins March 4, 1945 at Immanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. J. B. Ackermann.  She survives.
