Thomas Ewing, 96,
Dies at Rock Island

Thomas Ewing, 96, died Tuesday morning at 9:30 at St. Anthony hospital in Rock Island, Ill.

Mr. Ewing was born June 14, 1853, in Pomery, Ohio, a son of Susan Dyke and Samuel Ewing.  He was the eldest of three children and last surviving.

With his parents, he came to Illinois from Ohio in a covered wagon at the close of the Civil War and settled in Fountain Green township.  He grew to manhood in that vicinity.  He married Miss Sarah Rymer, who with one son and daughter preceded him in death.

Survivors are Mrs. Helen Frederickson, of Rock Island, and Mrs. Rose Hackett, of Carthage, Ill.  Also seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, at The Elms, with Rev. Frank Leonard officiating.  Mrs. Pearl Calhoun sang "In the Garden" and "God Will Take Care of You," accompanied by Mrs. Irma Smith.

Pallbearers were Farrill Gaines, Scotty Duffy, Kenneth Hackett, Donald Hackett, Lawrence Hackett and Leo Austin.  Burial was in Oakwood cemetery, at Hamilton.


note:  Leo Austin should be Melvin Leo Austin -- grandson of the sister of Thomas Ewing.
