VETERAN OF CIVIL
WAR PASSES AWAY

Surgical Operation Following Several
Weeks Illness Fails To Restore
Health.

Daniel Ebert, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Fountain Green on Monday May 10.  Mr. Ebert had not been well for several weeks and a short time ago underwent a surgical operation from which he seemed to be recovering but his strength began to give away and he failed rapidly.

Daniel Ebert was born in Cumberland County, Penn., on May 25, 1841.  He was the oldest son of Philip and Mary Ebert, of whose family of twelve children there remain Mrs. Sophia Goldsberry of Lombard and Mrs. Jennie Long of Farragut, Ia.

He came to Illinois in young manhood and settled near Fountain Green.  On February 7, 1867 he was united in marriage to Fannie George and to this union six children were born.  Those surviving are Mrs. Leah Massingill of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Gussie Miller of Fountain Green. Mrs. Ebert died in 1877 and Mr. Ebert was again married to Betty Ann Sebert.  Five children blessed their union of whom remain Guy of Fountain Green, Gabe of Elvaston and Mae Lenix of near Carthage.  He is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Ebert died on March 1, 1892 and in 1893 he married Sarah Dennison who survives him.  When twenty-one years of age he enlisted as a private in the 51st regiment of Illinois and holds a war record of which he and his family were justly proud.  Of nearly two hundred volunteers from the community he was the last one in the township.

In early manhood he joined the Methodist church where he was always a faithful attendant.  Later his membership was transferred to the Presbyterian church.

Funeral services were held at Majorville at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning May 12 conducted by Rev. F. M. Branic.  Burial in Majorville cemetery.
