Basco

Sherman W. Earls, a long time resident of Basco, and vicinity passed away suddenly at his home Tuesday afternoon after a few days illness.  The deceased was a painter by trade at which he worked for many years.  He also operated a threshing machine and saw mill for several years, and was an expert workman.  He leaves surviving, his widow, Cora Earls, sons, Oral, of Texas, Vern of Hamilton, and Frank and Garnet of Basco, one daughter, Mrs. Mark Phillips, of Chicago.  Three sisters and one brother, all of Basco.  The funeral was held in the Baptist church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. Taylor of Denver after which the remains were interred in the south cemetery, the Masons having charge at the grave.  The family has the sympathy of the entire community.

Sherman W. Earls, the second son of John and Orpha Wilson Earls, was born in St. Marys township, Aug. 30, 1866 and passed away June 6th, 1933, aged 66 years 9 months and ?? days.

On Jan. 17th, 1889, he was united in marriage with Cora Twaddle.  To this union were born five children: Orral D. of Galena, Kansas; J. Vern of Hamilton, Ill.; Frank and Garnet of Basco, Ill.; and Mrs. Mark Phillips of Chicago, Ill., who with the wife survive him.  He also leaves four grandchildren, Edna, Lola and Laurie Earls of Galena, Kansas; and Darlene Earls of Basco; three sisters, Mrs. Jennie O'Brien of Basco; Misses Clara and Lelia Earls of Carthage and one brother, William D. Earls of Basco.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.

He spent three years in Kansas before his marriage.  About a year after coming from Kansas he was married and moved to McDonough county, where they lived for 16 years.  He then moved to Basco where he spent the remaining years of his life.

He was baptized in early life by Rev. Sherman, Christian minister and later united with the Baptist church of Basco.  He was also a member of the Masonic lodge of Basco.  A man of genial, kindly disposition, with a friendly word and smile for all.  He will be sadly missed in the community as well as in the family.  Funeral services were held in the Basco Baptist church, June 8th, conducted by Rev. W. A. Taylor of Denver, Ill.
