Column 2Death of John Earls
John Earls was born in the state of Virginia, Oct. 10, 1830, and passed away at his home four miles east of Basco, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock April 26, 1917, aged 86 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Mr. Earls came to the state of Illinois at the age of 18 years. In the year 1855 he was united in marriage to Orpha Wilson, to which union were born twelve children, two sons and five daughters, together with his beloved wife, who have preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Sherman W. and William D., also three daughters, Mrs. Jennie O'Brien, and the Misses Lela and Clara at home, who have very tenderly cared for him. Deceased is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mr. Earls has lived in the vicinity of Basco since about 1876 where he has demonstrated exemplary citizenship. For twenty years and more he has been afflicted with rheumatism and at times was hardly able to move about, then again by gaining health, was able to get about some by the aid of crutches. For about a year he had been unable to leave his home, yet in all his intense suffering he bore up bravely. The two daughters at home showed him all the comfort and kindness possible and were of much cheer to him.
Funeral services were held from the home Sunday morning at 10 o'clock by Elder Rice Harris, who had been a close neighbor for many years of the deceased. Rev. Harris spoke very highly of the life of the deceased in the community, having been intimately acquainted with Mr. Earls for a long time. D. C. Barber of Denver, also assisted at the services, having known Mr. Earls for some thirty-five years. Burial took place at Moss Ridge, Carthage, Ill.
