ERVIN EARLS

Sept. 23, 1942 -- July 5, 1997

Ervin Eugene "Gene" Earls, 54, of rural West Burlington, Iowa, died July 5, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born Sept. 23, 1942, in Carthage, to Ervin Gilbert Earls and Esta Newman Crear.

He is survived by one daughter, Latitia Ott of Westminster, Colo.; one son, Shane Earls of Edwards, Colo.; six sisters, Karlene Lange of Burlington, Iowa, Sylvia Eppley of St. Louis, Mo., Penny Weigandt and Cindy Rohrer, both of Moline, Marcia Johnson of Basco, and Eleanor Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; stepmother, Bonnie Earls of Basco; and five brothers, Dean Crear of Griggsville, Robert Crear and Lyle Crear, both of Chicago, Dan Earls of Basco, and Curtis Crear of Lincoln, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and one sister.

He graduated from Carthage Community High School in 1960.  He graduated in 1961 from Chicago Tech, in 1964 from Quincy Tech for drafting, and in 1987 from Western Illinois University for computer programming.

Earls was a draftsman for Midwest Carbide Corporation of Keokuk, Iowa.  He worked at E. I. Dupont of Fort Madison, Iowa, Earl's Plumbing and Heating in Basco, and Hancock Service Company in West Point.

He served in the Army Reserves from 1960 to 1966 and was a member of the V.F.W.

He was of the Protestant faith.

Memorial services were held July 12 at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington, Iowa with the Rev. Mark Schowalter officiating.  Interment was in South Cemetery at Basco.
