Clara Jane, daughter of John and Orpha Wilson Earls was born at St. Marys Nov. 22, 1869 and passed to her reward at her home in Basco Jan. 8, 1946.
Early in life she was baptized in the Union Baptist faith, thus taking the first step on the long path of duty and righteousness from which she never strayed.
Bereft of her mother at an early age, she accepted the burdens and responsibilities of the home as her own, and performed those duties to the best of her ability, giving devoted companionship and respect to her father and care and affection to the younger children.
Of a quiet, home loving nature, her greatest joy was found among those near and dear to her, and she was never happier than when recalling girlhood days and relating amusing anecdotes of happenings in her father's home, and among her former friends and neighbors. Possessed of artistic talent, she never sought to develop this gift commercially, believing a woman's home to be the highest expression of her taste and talent, and the pleasure and well being of her family the noblest goal to which one could aspire.
To this end she labored long and faithfully, and to those who knew her best the thought ever came of the description of the virtuous housewife of the scripture, "She riseth while it is yet dark and prepareth meat for her household."
Of the twelve brothers and sisters in her home, two are left, Lela, her constant companion and untiring nurse and William, to whom she ever gave a mother's care.
There are also several nephews and nieces, and other more distant relatives.
