BENTLEY

Joseph M. Dunsworth was born September 4th, 1833, near Middletown, McDonough county Ill.  His father Thomas Dunsworth, was a native of Tennessee, and was of Irish descent.  After arriving at the years of maturity he was united in marriage to Nancy Hall, of the same state, and in 1827 they removed to Johnston Co., Ill., and in 1830 they became residents of McDonough Co., IllJoseph M. Dunsworth the subject of our sketch was one of thirteen children and spent the days of his youth on his father's farm in McDonough Co.  He was educated in a log school house, furnished in primitive style to which he had to walk a distance of 3½ miles.  His father died ere he was ten years of age, but he remained at home with his mother until the age of 26.  He was familiar with the history of pioneer life in this section of the state, for his was a frontier home, and with his family he shared in all the hardships and difficulties of such a life.  He began farming for himself in McDonough County and there remained until 1876 which year witnessed his arrival in Hancock Co.  On the 21st of June 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Timberlake daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Russell Timberlake.  To this union thirteen children were born, six of whom died in infancy.  Those still living to cheer their now invalid mother are, William, Daniel, Walter, Clarence, Arthur, Mrs. Maggie Hardy and Alleta the youngest.  Mr. Dunsworth was taken sick with pneumonia the 7th, and died at his late home one and a half miles southwest of Bentley the 11th.  The funeral took place at the home on 13th, Rev. H. D. Johnson, pastor of the M. E. Church preaching a very touching funeral discourse after which the remains were conveyed to Harmony cemetery and laid to rest in the family burial lot.

If space would permit we could say much of the beautiful characteristics of the deceased as a husband, father and citizen.  There were none better than he in this vicinity, and while he has gone from us, his memory is sweet to our minds.  The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief stricken family.
