S. B. DUFFY, A
PROMINENT EAST
COUNTY CITIZEN

Passed Away After
Long Illness on
Jan. 12

Passed away on the morning of Jan. 12, 1935, aged 69 years, 4 months and 13 days.

He was the son of Samuel and Fannie (Meeks) Duffy, early and honored pioneers of this community, where for many years they held worthy part and place in the upbuilding of its interests.  They long held residence some three miles south and west of Fountain Green, where were reared their family of two sons and three daughters.  Into this home this son was born Aug. 28th, 1865, and his passing leaves remaining, Mrs. Tillie Pennock of Carthage, Mrs. Sally Carey of Duluth, Minn., and J. A. Duffy, who owns and occupies the parental homestead.  One sister, Verdelia Berges, preceded Mr. Duffy in death.

As Ben Duffy advanced in years, he became very popular with the young people --- developed great musical talent and he and his violin were much in demand.

On June 29, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Mull of Fountain Green.  Two sons blessed their union, both now surviving, Clarence of Fountain Green and Farlin of Burnside.  This wife and mother passed away in young womanhood.

On May 1st, 1895, Mr. Duffy was married to Miss Jeanette Williams, one of our home girls.  Several children were born to them.  Remaining with the mother to mourn their loss are Orville, of LaHarpe; Robert and Floyd, of Carthage; Mrs. Laura Weatherington, of Burnside; Mrs. Sarah LeMaster of Peoria, and Mrs. Mary Dahl, of Hamilton.

There are also sixteen grandchildren and one great great grandchild.  One son, Kermit, a remarkably bright and talented boy passed away in 1922 bringing great grief and disappointment to the devoted parents.

Mr. Duffy was well esteemed as a neighbor and friend.  He was a man whose ability was recognized and he has been called upon to hold positions of public trust.

He was at one time located in Pilot Grove township where he served as supervisor for seven years.  While living in Fountain Green he served the community in official capacity, at all times meeting his duties and obligations in a way to bring credit to himself and win the approval of the people.

Being much interested in educational affairs he took active and efficient part in the establishment and erection of our high school which has brought such benefit to our young people.  He long held place on its board of directors.

Mr. Duffy was a Mason of long standing, having advanced to the thirty-second degree, greatly attached and loyal to the principles and precepts of the order.

Something more than a year ago a decline in health was noted, which it was hoped medical skill and efficient care might arrest.  Many remedies giving promise of relief were tried, with little benefit resulting.

He has battled bravely, bearing with courage, patience and submission the added pain and waning strength which has marked the passing months during which the great gravity of his care became more increasingly evident.

While the rapid decline of these later weeks left no hope of ultimate recovery, well aware of the serious nature of his condition, well aware of what the future held in store, well aware that his earthly journey was nearing its close, Mr. Duffy made his peace with God, committing himself into his care and keeping, and in full assurance of faith and hope passed into the presence of the heavenly father he had lately learned to trust.          W. W. B.

The funeral services were held at The Elms in Carthage, Monday afternoon.  Rev. C. Harmon Johnson of the Presbyterian church officiating.  Interment was in Moss Ridge cemetery, near the graves of his parents.
