Ethern L. Dorothy
Of Burnside Dies

Ethern L. Dorothy, son of A. J. and Mary Pennock Dorothy was born May 17, 1874 on a farm in Pilot Grove township east of Burnside, and departed this life April 27, 1947 at his home in Burnside.  He was one of a family of seven children consisting of five sisters and one brother all of whom have long since passed into eternity.  His father being a farmer, it was natural for him to follow that vocation during his younger days.  His farming operations were confined to this vicinity except for a short sojourn in Missouri near Kahoka.

In 1897 he was married to Miss Ella Atwater of Burnside, to which union were born three sons, Coy and Everett who survive and William who died in infancy.  The young wife passed away in 1910 leaving the care of the two small sons to the sorrowing husband and father.

In 1912 he was married to Maud Funkhouser and three children came to bless this union, Lyndell, June (Mrs. Dale Dulaney), and Ruth all of whom survive together with a half sister, Mrs. Bardo Verhalen of Peoria and six grandchildren.

While a young man he joined the Christian church here and has ever remained faithful to the teachings of the church of his choice.

His health declined so that it was necessary to retire from active duties some years ago, but he still remained cheerful and content with his station in life.  Late this winter he suffered a severe sick spell caused by high blood pressure and in his weakened condition was unable to successfully combat this dread disease.

He retired early Saturday evening, complaining of feeling tired but apparently no worse than usual, but when his wife attempted to waken him Sunday morning she discovered he had passed away during his sleep. Dr. Kelly was called and found, upon examination, he had been dead several hours.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a. m. at the Methodist church in charge of Rev. Hansen, the pastor.  Pallbearers were Virgil Thompson, Arthur Salisbury, Ed Weeks, C. D. Jacob, Ed Underwood and C. A. Todd.  Burial was in McKay cemetery.
