A. J. Dorothy was born in McDonough Co., Feb. 13, 1835, died June 20, 1902. He was married to Miss Mary Pennock in 1856, who died Feb. 20, 1886. To this union were born 7 children, 5 girls and 2 boys all of whom are dead but one son, Ethen, who lives in Burnside. He was married to Miss Fannie Lowery Aug. 18, 1891. The fruits of this marriage is one little girl about 7 years old, who with her mother are left to mourn the loss of an indulgent father and husband. Funeral sermon preached by Rev. Shiplit at Burnside in the Christian church of which he had been a member for several years and burial at McKay cemetery Sunday June 22, beside his first wife and five daughters and son. We have known Mr. Dorothy all his life and can say he had as many friends and as few faults as any man. He was industrious and was of a contented mind looking to the welfare of others more than to his own, was one reason why he had no more of this world's goods, although he had enough to live comfortable. A crowded house listened to an able funeral discourse delivered by his pastor Rev. Shiplet and 33 carriages followed his remains to its last resting place. Mr. Nathan Dorothy, of Blandinsville, and other relatives and friends attended his funeral, also relatives of the widow among whom were Mrs. James Welsh, of Nauvoo, and many others.
