Joetta man dies
in trailer blaze

Hancock Countain James A. Day, 34, died Monday in an early-morning fire which destroyed his house trailer about 1.5 miles southwest of Joetta.

Sheriff Richard Yager and Coroner Richard Kerr believe the fire started from a faulty liquid-propane gas furnace.  Day probably was asleep at the time.  He lived alone.

Yager said the blaze already had destroyed the trailer, parked on a farm owned by Bernard Campbell, when someone reported it to his deputies at 6 a.m.  The deputies called Fountain Green firemen who arrived too late to do anything.

Day worked at the Hancock County Rehabilitation Workshop and the Ben Franklin Store, both in Carthage.

Dr. Kerr will conduct an inquest on a date to be determined.  He has appointed a coroner's jury of Jack Hulen, Donald Bentzinger, Lee Troute, Paul Campbell, Donald Welch and Richard Lunt, all of Carthage.

Funeral services for Mr. Day were held at 11 a.m. today in Jones Mortuary Chapel, Colchester, with the Rev. James Rueberg officiating.

Burial will be in Majorville Cemetery.  Memorials can be made to the Hillsboro United Methodist Church.

Mr. Day was born Aug. 14, 1943, in Macomb, the son of Arlin F. and Mary Mort Day, Rt. 1, Colchester.  He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He leaves his parents; two children, Roger Lee Day and Nicole Day, both of LaHarpe; and a brother, Lewis R. Day, Rt. 1, Colchester.
