LIFE-LONG COUNTY
RESIDENT DIESThe Oak Grove community was saddened to learn of the passing of a life-long resident, Mrs. Selma Cox. Though she had been in failing health the past two years she had been seriously ill less than two weeks.
Selma Printy Cox, one of a family of six children who came to bless the home of Moses F. and Margaret E. Cameron Printy, was born at the Printy homestead, east of Carthage, Illinois, October 2, 1863. She departed this life at the Zunkel hospital at Carthage, December 8, 1944, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 6 days, pneumonia being the immediate cause of her death.
She attended the country schools in Hancock county and finished her education in Valparaiso, Indiana. She taught school a few years but when her father died she felt her mother needed her so she stayed at home to care for her. She was a great reader, had a keen interest in happenings of this world around her, and was very civic minded.
She joined Oak Grove Christian church in early girlhood and her church always meant much to her. She exemplified its teachings in her daily living and those in need often found her a friend in deed.
She was married to A. R. Cox February 21, 1906, of East Carthage community. To this union was born one son, Howard Wayne, December 18, 1907. Though Mr. Cox passed away in 1919, Mrs. Cox was determined her son should have a good education. Her one ambition was to give him the best the world had to offer. He attended country school, then Carthage high school and Carthage college and graduated from University of Illinois in 1931. Just as he was ready to help care for his mother he was accidentally killed working at an electric substation near Decatur, Illinois, February, 1932. The shock was great and his untimely death has since been a great sorrow in her life.
Since his passing she has made a home for her two brothers, Herschel and Walter Printy. They and a nephew, Clarence Bruner of Augusta, many other relatives and friends will ever cherish and revere her memory. She was preceded to the Great Beyond by her father and mother, two sisters, Naoma C. Printy, Flora Printy Bruner and one brother, Moses Edgar Printy.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cox were held Sunday afternoon, December 10, in the Christian church in Carthage, the Rev. H. C. Reichel of Hamilton officiating. Mrs. Frieda Hubbard and Mrs. Pearl Calhoun sang two hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden." Mrs. Lowell Smith was the accompanist. Interment was in Moss Ridge.
