Obituary

Loven Cox was born April 18, 1827, in Floyd county, Virginia and died at the home of his son, Martin, in Allen county Kas., June 9, 1904, aged 77 years, 1 month and 22 days.  His illness was of short duration, being sick only eleven days, when death relieved his sufferings which were very great, but the end came peacefully and sooner than was expected.  He was married to Miss Nancy Phillips in the year of 1846 in Virginia and with his wife and three children came to Illinois in the fall of 1856, where he purchased a farm upon which he settled but owing to his wife having poor health; she being constantly sick and at last was removed to Keokuk, Iowa, to a hospital, where she was operated upon for tumor in the right side from which she never rallied, dying there November 16, 1860.  The farm and little home was sold to pay expenses.  To this union were born four children, two boys and two girls namely: Ruth, Mastin, Jacob and RosellJacob died July 17, 1890.

Upon the death of his wife he was left with four small children the oldest only ten years of age.  Thus the family circle was broken forever upon this earth, but all lived and hoped it would be reunited upon the other shore where parting is never known.

He was again married in 1865 to Mrs. Susan Drummond.  This marriage proved unhappy and they soon parted.  To this union were born two girls.

On Feb. 21, 1886, he with his son Mastin and family moved to Kansas, he making his home there and part of the time in Illinois.  Three years ago he spent the summer in Illinois in the fall going to Virginia where he visited his birthplace, where he spent childhood's happy hours.  After spending a part of the winter there he returned to Kansas.  He united with the Primitive Baptist church at Providence this county in the year 1879.  On his removal to Kansas he was granted a letter from the church and placed his membership with a church there.  He was a firm believer in the doctrine of the Primitive Baptist and died strong in that faith.  He was a good neighbor and kind father.  He leaves to mourn three children; Mrs. Floyd Cox, Carthage, Ill., Mastin Cox, Bardford, Kansas, Mrs. Edward Climo, Marlfosa, Cal.  By second marriage one daughter survived, the other one, Mrs. Amanda Allison dying in Colorado some four years ago.  He leaves eight grandchildren, he was laid to rest beside two of his little grandsons in Kansas on Friday evening June 10, 1904.

    Grandfather sleep on peacefully,
        Where they laid you down to rest;
    O, God 'tis true that he has gone,
        No more to them return;
    But may they Lord, meet him again,
        In that bright heavenly home.

BY A GRANDDAUGHTER.

Note:  I have been told that Loven Cox is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Mildred, Allen County, Kansas.
