Column 2Pioneer Dead
Mr. John W. Cox, one of the staunch pioneers of this county, died at his home on St. Marys prairie last Friday, after a long illness.
Mr. Cox was born in Montgomery county, Va., in April, 1822. He came to this county from Virginia in 1843, and was in the county during the Mormon troubles. He was married to Mrs. Julia Printy in 1847, to which union was born six children, three of whom, Mrs. J. P. Graves and Mrs. Joe Martin, of Washington, and Mrs. Sidnor Powell of this county, survive. He was the step-father of Mrs. Alvina Davis and Mrs. A. F. Helms, and showed them the same consideration and care as his own.
In the early years of his life he taught school, but later took up farming, which he continued.
Mr. Cox was well and popularly known over the county, and a good man has gone to his reward. The funeral, which was very largely attended, occurred Sunday afternoon, Judge C. J. Scofield officiating. Burial at Holland cemetery.

John W. Cox died at his home on St. Marys prairie Aug. 9 after a long illness, aged 79. His wife was Miss Julia Printy, to whom he was married in 1847. Of their six children three survived, Mrs. J. P. Graves and Mrs. Joe Martin of Washington and Mrs. Sidnor Powell, of this county. He was the step-father of Mrs. Alvina Davis and Mrs. A. F. Helms. While young Mr. Cox taught school but later took up farming. The funeral was conducted by Judge Scofield and burial was in Holland cemetery.
