Chief Robert Jessie Carle, 70, of Basco, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at his home in Basco of cancer.
He was born June 6, 1932, the son of Clifford B. and Elva Smith Carle in Hancock County. On Oct. 10, 1972, he married Betty Hutcheson in Quincy.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Basco; two daughters, Wanda (Jim) Lyons of Warsaw, and Patty (Terry) Daniels of Keokuk; one son, Robert (BJ) Carle at home; six grandchildren, Joey (Stacy) Heckrodt of Whitehall, James (Dana) Heckrodt of Whitehall, Jessie Garrett of Springfield, Terry (Rhonda) Daniels Jr., of St. Louis, Troy (Tara) Daniels of Warsaw, and Christina (Dave) Burnett of Tioga; 12 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Corey, and Kelsey Heckrodt and Nick Dean of Whitehall, Victoria and Marissa Daniels and Shelby Stewart of Warsaw, Taryn and Tiffany Daniels and Luke McGee of St. Louis, and Kyle and Kale Burnett of Tioga; three sisters, Hazel Appledorn and Doris Carson of Carthage, and Carol Ogan of California; two brothers, Clifton (Laura) of Carthage, and Vaughn of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
On Sept. 19, 1949, he was inducted into the U.S. Navy. He received his honorable discharge on June 15, 1970. He served during both Korea and Vietnam and was part of the retrieval team on the Gemini 8 landing. Besides his military service he loved woodworking and crocheting neckscarfs for his grand and great grandchildren. He spent as much time as he could with his family. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carthage, the American Legion, V.F.W., and the Fleet Reserve Association.
Graveside services were held Monday, Oct. 21, at South Basco Cemetery with full military rites.
A memorial fund has been established. Memorials may be dropped off or sent to Neiser-Printy Funeral Home, 603 Walnut St., Carthage, Ill., 62321.
