Column 3It is again our sad duty to pen the life of another patriotic citizen who has passed from this world of earthly strife into God's garden of rest.
John Campbell was born Jan. 12, 1840, in Hancock County, Ill., and died at his home in Tennessee, Ill., June 29, 1911, age 71 years, 5 months and 17 days. When the war broke out, Mr. Campbell offered his life in defense of the union. He enlisted under Captain S. W. King, of La Harpe, in the 50th Illinois regiment. He possessed the unfailing courage and enduring fortitude which makes the true soldier. He gave his loyal services to his country during the entire war, and at its close received an honorable discharge. On June 27, 1890, Mr. Campbell was granted a pension, and was of an age to receive the increase granted a short time ago under the new pension law.
He was married Sept. 8, 1865, to Miss Agnes Mort. To this union 16 children were born, of whom 11 are living, viz.: William, of Oklahoma; Mrs. Agnes White, of California; Mrs. Irma Golf, of Rock Island; Mrs. Alta Mourning, Mrs. Belle Gordon and Mrs. Ida Conn, of Tennessee; Mrs. Fannie Shifley and Charlie, of this vicinity; Thomas, Thurman and Nina, at home; who, with the wife and a number of grandchildren; two brothers; one sister, Mrs. Mary A. Cambron, of Blandinsville, and a large circle of friends, survive to mourn his departure.
Mr. Campbell has lived in our vicinity all of his life but about six months, which was spent in Kansas. He was one of our most highly honored citizens, was an industrious, honest, truthful, generous man, whose word was as good as his bond. When he made an assertion, it was not necessary to investigate it. He has been in failing health for a number of years, but, being a great reader, he kept well-informed on all topics of the day. Mr. Campbell was reared in the Catholic faith, and was a true believer of that doctrine until his death. It was his request that he be buried in Majorville cemetery, where his deceased children are sleeping. Funeral services were held at that place Saturday, July 2, conducted by Rev. L. P. Bear, assisted by Rev. Wm. Love.
