Columns 3, 4 & 5Mrs. Agnes Campbell, entered into life eternal, on the evening of Dec. 30, 1922.
The passing of this good woman, and dear mother, brings to a close the earthly journey of one, who lived well and worthily, one faithful and true in her varied relation in life, one who did justly and walked humbly with her God.
Agnes Mort, daughter of Jacob and Jane (Oakman) Mort was born, July 28, 1848, in Pennsylvania, and suddenly, but gently and peacefully fell asleep at the home of her son, Charley Campbell on the evening of Dec. 30, 1922, aged 74 years, 5 months, and 2 days.
Her parents came to Illinois, when she was a little child of eight years of age, settling in Hancock township, where she spent her care free, happy childhood days, and passed childhood to young womanhood, and by her pleasant genial, jovial nature, she adapted herself to old and young alike, all through her life.
She was united in marriage to John Campbell, at Nauvoo, Illinois, Sept. 8, 1865.
Sixteen children were born to them, of whom nine are living, namely: William, of Oklahoma, Mrs. Agnes White, of Oregon, Mrs. Frances Shifley, of Macomb, Mrs. Belle Gordon, and Mrs. Ida Conn, of Tennessee, Thomas, Charley, and Thurman, of Colchester, and Mrs. Irma Golf of Plymouth, who now mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother.
There are also a number of grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, one brother, Charles Mort, and three sisters, Mrs. Christina Pierce, Mrs. Susie Jones, and Mrs. Frances White, many old friends and neighbors and friends, who mourn her death.
Mr. and Mrs. Campbell had lived in this and nearby vicinity, all their married life, but about six months, which was spent in Kansas. The husband and father, departed this life, June 29, 1911, at the age of 71 years, 5 months, and 17 days.
Early in life, Mrs. Campbell became a christian and for a number of years, was a faithful member of the Christian Church in Central.
In the year of 1900, she united with the Majorville M. E. Church, where she held membership at the time of her death.
One of her greatest pleasures was in attending and taking an active part in all church and Sunday School work, and was faithful to her church and present at all services until failing health compelled her to remain at home.
While in the fullness of health, there never was a call of sickness or distress which came to her, which she did not respond to. Her home was open to all friends, at all times, and she greatly enjoyed their coming, and all who crossed her threshold were sure of a gracious welcome, and an abundant hospitality. She was a woman of splendid health, until about four years ago, when she was stricken with an incurable affliction, from which recovery could not be expected. During all these years, she has been tenderly and lovingly cared for by her children in their different homes.
They have been untiring in their devotion and efforts to make mother as comfortable as was in their power to do so.
These children have the one comforting thot today, in their grief, that they have done all that love, care and devotion could do for their dear mother. She has passed on to her reward, her life work here is ended, and she is at rest. So mourn not dear children for her, for mother has found the dear ones, gone on before, and when those whom she loved so dearly here depart for that heavenly home, may she be the first to give them her greetings within the "Gates of Paradise."
Dear mother, we know we would not
brake, if we could your slumber and
have you wake,
But now that you lie in a breathless
sleep,
Instead of rejoicing we sigh and
weep.Funeral services were held on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 1923, at Majorville.
Rev. H. M. Bloomer, of Macomb, her pastor 22 years ago, and a warm personal friend of the family, officiating, who paid her a high tribute.
The floral offerings were very beautiful.
Interment in the family lot in Majorville cemetery.
