Valeria Ann Burnett
Dies at Quincy

Valeria Ann Burnett was born December 14, 1862, in Hancock township and passed away September 10, 1952, in the Dyer Nursing Home in Quincy after an illness of almost two years.  Her age at her death was 88 years, 8 months and 28 days.  She was a lifelong resident of the Bentley and Denver vicinities.

She was the daughter of William and Artismessa Smith and was one of eight children.  Her mother, father, three sisters and two brothers, preceded her in death.

She was married August 26, 1880 to Alfred Burnett who passed away November 10, 1920.  Two daughters were born to this union, Mrs. Josie Matheny of Quincy and Mrs. Edythe Landis of Carthage, who mourn her passing.  Also surviving are three grandchildren, Mrs. Pauline Merritt of Chicago, Mrs. Mildred Van Doren of Quincy, and Raymond McCallister, of Carthage, and three great grandchildren, Carol Jeanne McCallister, Jennifer Merritt and Rickey Van Doren.

One sister, Mrs. Ellen Austin of east of Carthage, and one brother, Court Smith of Bentley, also survive.

Mrs. Burnett was united with the Denver Christian church in 1889 during the pastorate of Rev. Cramer and attended faithfully until her health failed.  Following the fracture of her hip in a fall December 19, 1950, she was taken to Memorial Hospital, Carthage, where she was a patient for several months, and more recently she had been cared for in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Landis, and in nursing homes.

Last rites were held from the Denver Christian church on Friday, Sept. 12 at 2:00 p. m. with the Revs. John Botkins and James Griffis, officiating.

Pall bearers were: Earl Van Doren, Raymond McCallister, Taylor Mabry, Rhett Thompson, Fred Meyer and James Fleming.

Interment was in Harmony cemetery.
