CLYDE BRYANT KILLED
BY FALL OF ROCK

Clyde Bryant, of Keokuk, formerly of Alexandria, and three other men were killed by a fall of rock in the McManus quarry near Keokuk, Iowa, last Friday afternoon, a roof seam giving away.

The other men killed were Wesley Cagle of Keokuk, Wayne Gee of Montrose, and Cecil White (colored) of Keokuk.

The inquest was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the county court house and was conducted by E. E. Hawkes, acting coroner, with a verdict of accident.

Herbert Humes was working near the scene of the accident.  His truck was mashed by the rock.  Humes was said to have been fixing a light at the time, and was only a short distance away from the place where the rock fell, according to the Gate City.

This is the most serious accident that has occurred at the McManus quarry, and is the second one inside of a month.  One man, George Johnson, was killed July 18, when rock fell after a blast and crushed him.

Up to that time the quarry had been operating for thirty years without a serious accident.

All of the men killed were married and leave families.

According to Thomas J. McManus, secretary-treasurer of the McManus quarries, the accident occurred when a roof seam that apparently was solid, gave way without any warning, crushing the four men at work.

A. Clyde Bryant of 719 Ridge street, Keokuk, Iowa, was born in Alexandria, Mo., on June 28, 1891, and was the son of Robert W. and Nannie Brandon Bryant.  He moved to Keokuk last February.

On February 22, 1912, he was united in marriage with Della Bennett.  Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive him.

He was a member of the Christian church.

Surviving him besides his wife, are the following children: Russell, Izola, Nellie, Gladys, Dorothy and Clyde LeRoy.  There are also three brothers, G. W. Bryant of Fort Madison, and James Oscar and Marion Emmett, both of Alexandria.

Funeral services were held from the Pearson, Schmidt and Holbrook funeral parlors Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. F. Edwin Gray officiating.

The pallbearers were Clifford Smeltser, Sam Smeltser, H. Smeltser, Louis McGhghy, Carver Rebo and William Croak.  Interment was made in the Frazee cemetery.
